I’m Emma, 31, from Sweden — a dog person first, a maker second, and the person who started Pupfest because I couldn’t find a portrait of my dog that actually looked like him.

His name is Bentley. A few years ago I went looking for a piece I could hang in my hallway: something quiet enough for a real home, and true enough that I’d recognize him from across the room. Not a cartoon. Not a generic “dog in a sweater.” Him. Especially the way his eyes look when he’s waiting at the door — that still, hopeful, slightly impatient stare that means he heard my keys before I even reached the landing.

I came up short.

Every option I found was one of three things: too cute to be him, too expensive to trust, or close enough that it almost hurt — the markings roughly right, the face a stranger’s. I commissioned one piece from an artist I found online. When it arrived, Bentley’s eyes were round and glossy, like a stock illustration. I turned it toward the wall and left it there for a week. That was the moment I stopped shopping and started building.

It was not instant. I spent months learning professional art tools, studying his face the way you study someone you live with and somehow still miss: the uneven flash of white on his chest, the darker patch above his left eye, the way one ear tips a little later than the other. I printed tests on cheap paper and taped them to the fridge. Bentley would walk past them without a glance. Then one night I hung a new proof in the hall, flicked on the lamp, and for a second I thought he was sitting there. That was the rush — not “a nice picture of a dog,” but the feeling of being closer to him. Of showing him, in the only language a wall has, that he matters.

Since then I’ve had one goal: to give that same feeling to as many people as love their dogs the way I love mine.
